Last Thursday the Arizona House voted to allow people to carry guns on college/university campuses. Firearms can now be carried in the open or concealed in public rights of way, such as campus streets and roadways. Click here to read the full article.
“We’re allowing people to defend themselves,” said Representative David Gowan Sr., who voted for the bill. “The purpose of carrying a gun with you is to defend yourself against that aggressor,” he added.
Before Arizona’s vote, Utah was the only other state to allow such gun rights. Only, in Utah’s case, firearms are also allowed inside campus buildings.
I’d like to point out to Representative Gowan that his argument that people should be able to defend themselves sounds brilliant until one of the following things happen:
- A student kills a professor
- A professor kills a student
- A student kills a student
- A professor kills a professor
If guns are allowed on campuses, they’re going to be brought into buildings whether it’s legal or not. In fact, it’s probably already occurring. This law simply encourages more guns to be present. Let’s see…a gun and a college student who may or may not be thinking rationally and who may or may not have had a few beers at the local fraternity house beforehand. Yikes! Sounds like a lethal cocktail to me. What do you think?

I really hope Ohio expands it’s laws regarding carrying on campus. Right now, the guns must remain stored in vehicles, and can’t be brought into class rooms or residential areas.
But it’s nice to see our gov’t is finally realizing how basic our right to defend ourselves is, especially in the class rooms where we are truly sitting ducks. Too bad Virginia Tech isn’t located in modern day Arizona. That incident likely would never occur.
Well, if it allows someone to shoot at some weirdo on a shooting spree, then ok. But it does scare me a bit to think of these kids with guns. Yeah, they are just kids to me.
As someone who’s family member was killed by gun during a domestic dispute, I can never ever ever ever support this. It’s disgusting.
I think guns should be done with, huge crack down, then regular citizens won’t have to worry about straw bullets, highway shooters and other-too-many-to-list reasons… I’m totally against guns, except public officers.
No worries, Elle Marie. There are plenty of socialist and communist countries run by tyrants that have created the safety zone you mentioned. If you can’t figure out who the public officers are, they’re the one’s pointing their guns at you and telling you what you can and can’t do.
YEEEEEEE HAWWWWW, I thinks we gonna have a gunfight…………..3:10 to Yuma. The bad guys get the good guy but then the one bad guy gets the other bad guys or something like that, bang bang.
I’m not a big “gun guy” myself, but I know enough that it’s people that kill people, regardless of how they decide to do it. As a parent with two young children that I hope go off to college one day, I would sure feel much safer knowing that in a case like what happend in Virginia that my kids would at least have a fighting chance vs being a sitting duck to someone who’s lost their mind.
I would be curious to see some stats on Utah. It’s easy to sit here and assume that simply because guns are permitted now that it means students will kill professors and vise versa, assumptions mean nothing.
I guess for me, in a country that is full of ridiculous laws and individuals that are too concerned about everyone but themselves I guess seeing a freedom upheld or granted once in a while isn’t too bad.
I haven’t seen you in a while bro I hope everything is going great, so UFC 130 GSP or Shields?
It gives me a sick feeling to think about guns in a classroom, but I guess when you think about it – if someone wants to shoot you they will find a way. It doesn’t matter if guns are allowed or not.
I would feel better if you had to pass some sort of course before carrying a weapon. Maybe you do…I don’t know.
I’m not sure if this is the best idea. I understand that people want the right to defend themselves, but now if a student is on the edge we have now given them a free pass to bring there gun into the class and carry out whatever they want to do. I know that some kids have grown up knowing how to responsibly use a gun. But now we will have people carrying guns that don’t know how to use them and will probably end up shooting themselves or innocent people. For example: In a classroom on a college campus. A student pulls a gun during class and starts to shoot. Now instead of one person shooting, you will have the entire class shooting and how many more people will be hurt or killed? To me this is a lose/lose situation. You ban guns from campus, and somehow someone can still sneak one in pass security or you give people the right to carry guns and now the classrooms are full of them and it seems like we are back in the wild wild west. Everyone for themselves. Let’s just hope when they reach in there bag for there books they don’t accidentally shoot someone.
The Ohio Senate has just passed the Restaurant Concealed Carry law…now we can carry in restaurants that serve alcohol as long as we’re not drinking…Still needs to pass the House, and Governor needs to sign it. Nice to see Ohio is slowing coming out of the dark ages when it comes to our right to defend ourselves.
so UFC 130 GSP or Shields?(Extreme John)
Come on man, shields is bringing a knife to a gunfight. GSP shoots him dead. 😉
