Lettermoron

June 10, 2009 by admncc

I don’t know about you, but I have never been a fan of David Letterman’s.  As far as late-night TV is concerned, I’ve always preferred Jay Leno and “The Tonight Show.”  At this point, I’m not sold on Conan O’Brien taking over for Leno, but he’s still much better than Letterman.

You might be aware that Letterman is making some headlines today for some comments he made during his monologue last night.  Letterman said that while she was in New York, Sarah Palin, Alaska’s governor “bought makeup at Bloomingdale’s to update her slutty flight attendant look.”  He also said, “One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game, during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.”

You can view the Fox News story here.  You can also view Letterman’s “Top 10 List” on Palin here.

What Letterman apparently didn’t realize (about his Yankee joke) was that he was making a fun of Palin’s 18-year-old daughter, Bristol, who recently had a child – but the daughter actually with Palin at the baseball game was her 14-year-old, Willow…

So now the door is now wide open for Letterman to be bashed by critics for making perverted jokes about a minor and an inappropriate comment about a governor.

You be the judge.  Can Letterman say what he wants for a good laugh or did he cross the line?

  1. NeoConDon says:

The only people that saw this were the conservatives and moderates that watch fox news…nobody watches Letterman.

But I think it’s funny how frightened the loonie leftists like Letterman are by Sarah Palin. They’ll tell any lie and take any swipe to discredit her. If she wasn’t such a formidable opponent to the anti-american left, they’d be ignoring her…like they ignore McCain, Huckabee, Romney, Gulianni, and Thompson.

  2. I have never really liked David Letterman either. In fact, I don’t really think that any of our late night comedians are all that funny. I’d rather watch Talk Soup or Chelsea Lately. I do wonder why we are still talking about Sarah Palin though, sheesh, get some new, relevant material.

  3. Yeah some of this doesn’t make sense. For one thing, A-Rod prefers blonde man-ish Canadian strippers with busted faces…..

  4. Dan says:

I love when The Stabbing Pen comments on here. I can never top it.

    Letterman has jumped the shark.

  5. NeoConDon says:

I also love Chelsea Lately, Christina. She cracks me up, and so does chuey…(sp?)

  6. I find Letterman annoying but sometimes the Top 10 can be funny. Considering he’s probably just reading what someone else wrote, maybe he did not realize the other daughter was at that game. But whether he did or not, it was just a joke, maybe in poor taste, but still a joke. It’s time to move on.

  7. c.princess says:

Depending on who the guest is I don’t watch Letterman on a regular basis. Sometimes a joke can be taken too far. It’s one thing to joke about Sara but I think it was wrong to include her daughter in it.

  8. Marissa says:

It wasn’t even a funny joke. Leno would’ve come up with something alot more clever. I like Stabby’s observation about A-Rod.

  9. I personally don’t have an opinion on Letterman or Leno or any of the other late night shows. But based on reading what was written in the original post I don’t think he is opening the door for people to start bashing him.

He made a joke. Let’s move on and get on with our lives. I don’t think it was insulting actually but then again I’m a bitch 🙂

  10. William Gatherer says:

I hate to say but I haven’t really watched late night television in a while. Although I have caught up on my Tool Time fix lately. I would have to say that wherever A-Rod sunk his battle ship, Letterman should defenitly mind his P’s and Q’s when it comes to children. Rip on the bloomingdales bombshell all he wants, but get over it. The last time I watched letterman Drew Barrymore showed her Ta’Ta’s but all we saw was her back anyway.

  11. Jane says:

Jenny, I love it. A national media hub-bub and you say who cares and screw it. Reforming Geek, you too. You go, girls. Letterman dreams of being like Stern and tries once in a while to be shocking. He is just lame though.

  12. Mike says:

    Don,
No one’s trying to discredit Palin. She’s discredited herself enough in the past that no one needs to now. He was telling a joke about an idiot Governor. It happens. Was it funny? Probably not. I didn’t watch it. I’m not a fan of Letterman, Leno, or Conan. I’d consider giving Fallon a shot, but I haven’t watched him either.

My talk show is The Daily Show. It cracks me up and fake news doesn’t bother me.

    Christina,
I’d imagine it’s difficult for these talk show writers to come up with new material every day for years. However, you can’t blame them for talking about Palin considering she was actually in town. That’s a relevant topic whether you’re tired of hearing about her or not.

As for the intent of the CC’s post, I’m not familiar with the law in this area. Where is the line between harmless joke and slander? I’m just not sure in the eyes of the law. I think this situation can turn into just about anything Palin wants to make of it. Most likely it’ll result in a formal apology from Letterman one night soon. I seriously don’t think he’ll get the Don Imus treatment though. Whether he deserves such treatment is up for debate though.

  13. The Constant Complainer says:

CNN Politics reported the following Letterman quote this morning:

“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]… and now they’re upset with me,” Letterman said. “These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl.

“Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.”

  14. Dan says:

I heard a good comparison on the radio yesterday. Letterman made fun of Bristol Palin for being a young, un-wed, mother. But Letterman was with a younger woman and knocked her up about six years ago, but they just got married in 2009. He might not think it was so funny if the joke was about his wife.

  15. Timmy says:

It seems like it was an innocent mistake. In some people’s opinions it was in poor taste, but still an innocent mistake. His writers most likely didn’t know that it wasn’t Bristol at the Yankees game. I think that many people find that kind of humor funny, especially those who watch late night programming. Most of the time I do as well. I am someone who isnt easily offended by humor, and if I am having an especially bad day will turn on “Cops” to make myself feel better(works everytime by the way), that is just my sense of humor.

Usually comedians will get a free pass because what they say is in the premise of a joke. They get to take free cheap shots at everybody. That is what they get paid to do. How many more viewers will he get tonight because of the free pub that he got by saying something inappropriate. It keeps people taking about his show and not Conan, or Jimmy Fallon. He acheives exactly what he set out to do which was get into the news cycle.

The very people that are screaming for an apology are giving him more free commercials on every news television and radio show. They are giving the joke and the story the very exposure that they were “offended” by in the first place.

  16. Hi Mike. I didn’t know Sarah Palin was in town, in that case I agree that the joke was relevant. I’d also agree that it must be hard for the writers to come up with new jokes. I know I couldn’t do it.

  17. @NeoConDon I like Chuey too! I think its hilarious the way Chelsea always makes little cracks about his size. I wonder if he is ever offended.

  18. Extreme John says:

We differ greatly on this one TCC, but hey thats ok. I never liked Leno, I do however like Conan all though I find the show to be a little to loud for my night time mood.

I heard the joke last night and instantly thought, people will be bitching about it and I also felt it was in poor taste. The guys had a lot of shows and old a lot of jokes, you can’t be perfect every time. Not that I am saying he is perfect every other time, I just don’t think it’s a show stopper.

  19. NeoConDon says:

Sarah Palin was in town to do a fundraiser for special needs children. She had her 14 year old daughter with her. Certainly, it is not releveant to talk about a 14 year old getting knocked up by A-Rod…??? Do women have any sense of right wrong anymore. Why isn’t every woman in this county outraged by the comments of this extremely un-funny “comedian.” Saying this was in poor taste is an understatement. If I had a daughter, I’d keep her far from a scumbag like David Letterman.

  20. Timmy says:

Do you really think that they purposefully wrote a joke about 14 year old being the victim of a statutory rape. Or is a better explanation that they just heard Palin’s daughter was in town and assumed it was Bristol, you know, the one that has continuously been in the news. Come on you can’t really be that bull headed.

Where was your outrage when Chelsea Clinton was called horseface for 8 years by the right and late night talk shows. Should women be “outraged” over that still?

Thinks that the joke about the daughter was a mistake and in poor taste, but still not buying the righteous indignation. And i’ve seen some pretty racsist sketches on Chelsey Lately as well, you can’t have it both ways(still love that show)

Would like a night out with a flight attendant who looks like Sarah Palin…that is all!

  21. NeoConDon says:

There was very little outrage by the liberal media over the chelsea clinton stuff because it was coming from the liberal media..(there wasn’t a conservative media outlet at the time.) After Bill was impeached, the media really went crazy with their reporting…actually, it was more likely after Newt took over washington and clinton succomed…but it was wrong.

Regardless, there is no way that it could ever be considered funny or appropriate for a 14 year-old girl, or an 18 year-old girl being the butt of a joke about getting knocked up by A-Rod. Add to that the description of Gov. Palin by Letterman when he said she had a slutty stewaress look, and this is just plain backwoods redneck male shovanism…It goes to show how stupid and unfunny letterman is, the liberal media is, and liberal women are. Imagine if someone did a joke about Michelle Obama and her slutty little dresses…is that appropriate? I guess in 5 years, the obama girls are fair game for knock up jokes.

Are you people serious? The content of the character of those not outraged by lettermam is far below the typical cruel liberal character. If you have a daughter, keep her away from liberals..they’ll laugh if she gets raped, and make fun of her if she looks funny.

  22. Timmy says:

    Who are you agruing with?

Nobody said that the joke about her 14 year old child wasn’t in poor taste here. People have said that it was probably a mistake. I am sure that fact checkers in the letterman writing staff were reprimanded, doubt they were fired because it got him all this free publicity. (three days later and we are still talking about it)I said twice(see above posts) I thought it was in poor taste.

The joke about Palin herself, meh, pretty funny. When did the world get so PC it wasn’t allowed to have a sense of humor anymore? Somebody call the whhaaaambulance my feelings have been hurt!! Call it what you will, but show me any current comedian that doesn’t take shots public figures like that. That is just the way the industry is these days. If you are in the public limelight you are going to get shot at.

And yes, Michelle Obama is wide open for jokes like that. The media just doesn’t attack her, the left because they are afraid of Obama and the right because they are afraid of being labeled as racsist. That however, is a topic for an entirely different debate. One in which I am sure that you and I would agree.

  23. NeoConDon says:

    “whhaaaambulance”…that’s funny.

  24. The family is always off limits. Even if Palin did parade them around on the campaign trail first. The other members of the family are not in politics. And while teen pregnancy is not an ideal situation, it is not uncommon and ppl just need to leave Bristol alone to raise her child.

  25. I don’t think the joke was appropriate at all Don. Just because I didn’t state that doesn’t mean I think it was okay.

  26. Timmy says:

    Cosmo,

In a perfect world yes, in present day America, no. The American public have a funny way of deciding what is and what isnt their business. It is naive to think that she would be given a free pass because of an unideal(not sure if that is even a word) situation.

Not saying its right, just sayin’

  27. NeoConDon says:

    Timmy,

When we’re talking about A-Rod engaging in statuatory rape of the 14 year-old daughter of a sitting governor, the concept of PC doesn’t exist. I don’t have a daughter, but I have a wife, and sisters-in-law, and neices, and I can assure you that there is nothing funny about any of this.

The lack of outrage is unbelievable. It defines the left….I honestly can’t believe that I’m so surprised since the left has so very few values anymore. I guess the last bit of dignity that I thought the left had is gone…they don’t care about women, minorities, disabled, religions, etc…unless they need votes.

As a conservative, it is very difficult to understand the lack of morals, values, compassion, and self-respect from the left..not to mention the anti-americanism…This hatred and disgusting behavior must be stopped.

  28. TitforTat says:

First off I dont think David is funny. Secondly, if he said that about my daughter I would have threatened to beat the shit out of him. Oops did I just say that, let me correct and just say we would have some intense negotiations. 😉

  29. Mike says:

    Don…STFU.

Has the “Left” come out and said, “We don’t give a damn about what Letterman said”? No I don’t think they have done that collectively. Has the “Right” come out and said “We think Letterman is despicable and his values are horrible”? No I don’t think they’ve done that collectively either. So shut the hell up about left vs. right because this isn’t even about that. This is about Letterman and comments he made about Sarah Palin and her family.

You’re such a whiny little jobless leach.

  30. NeoConDon says:

Wow Libby…truth hurts and makes you angry, huh…???? The right has come out and told the truth about how much of a leftist hater Letterman is…The left has not stepped up to defend his dispicable remarks against young women…It is genuine left behavior, and you know it.

  31. NeoConDon says:

…sorry, that should read “the left HAS stood up to defend his dispicable rembarks against young women…”

I’d like to thank my awesome wife for finding the typo…now leave me alone, we’re heading to the pool, and then out for dinner!

  32. Mike says:

Provide some proof on how the entire f’ing left HAS stood up to defend his dispicable “Rembarks” against young women…

Your wife should have read a little closer to find the other typo. I won’t bash her though because I feel sorry enough that she puts up with you.

And don’t you mean that you’re heading to HER pool and that SHE’S taking YOU out to dinner…seeing how she’s the bread winner and all. You’ve got it made Don, you whiny leach.

  33. Zig says:

Mike, why do you continue to argue with NCD? He has unlimited time to research amnd write his mindless muckraking, rabble rousing innuendo!

  34. Mike says:

And why do you think he has the unlimited time Zig?

Because he doesn’t work for a living like us. He’s a leach and a drain on society.

  35. NeoConDon says:

My wife thinks you’re jealous, Mike…jealous that you don’t have a woman…jealous that you don’t have the ability to make serious cash so you can take 6 years off from work to raise your own kids instead of having strangers do it…jealous that you can’t spend everyday during the summer with your wife and kids at the pool and enjoy afternoon MLB baseball games and morning golf, or fishing, or being so bored that we can take an afternoon drive to the water slide park or Cedar Point. All while you wonder if you’re going to get a pink slip today because Obama is killing the economy…

That’s what she thinks, but I think she’s wrong…I think you’re just stupid.

  36. Mike says:

    Don,
Your wife is right. I am jealous. I’m jealous that you get to freeload off your wife and society while people like me are working their butts off. Oh, and Obama isn’t killing the economy. You might remember that it was dying before he got here. He’s trying to fix it, which is something that your boy Bush never bothered to do. He just left it alone and look where that got us.

I’d never actually wish this on you or anyone, but it would be ironic to see your wife get that pink slip…and then for you to collect that welfare check on the first of the month. God forbid you go out and look for a job, you’d much rather be a freeloading hypocrite.

  37. NeoConDon says:

    Libby,

You’re just a moron when it comes to current events and how bad of an economic president FDR was…good thing the world had Churchill for the war. You really should study history instead of relying on the b.s. you were “taught.”

I’m not really sure how you think I could be a “freeload” to society or my wife, but that’s probably your ignorance talking…

But listen up, old people, young stay home mothers and fathers….according to a rabid (and stupid) liberal, unless you’re working a job, you’re a drain on society and a freeloading hypocrite. If you decide that you’d rather save money and raise your own kids instead of paying someone else to do it, you’re a free loader. That’s what liberals like Lyin’ Linear Libby think of responsible people that take care of their families. Even though we pay our taxes, get our work done, and raise our kids to be patriots…Liberals will do anything to beat the little guy down to make them poor, or keep them poor…it’s the nature of liberalism.

Imagine what this guy will think when gov’t takes control of your healthcare. If you smoke, it will cost $20 per pack. If you drink alcohol, there will be a 300% tax. Fast food and soda, forget it, it will triple in price….your bad behavior will be a drain on society…Libby will stand back and say “we don’t want those who are unhealthy to force the rest of us to pay for their draining behavior.”

That is the cruel nature of liberalism…sad, mean, cruel, and full of hate for anyone living better than he is. Liberalism has nothing to do with equal wealth, it has everything to do with equal misery.

  38. Mike says:

Haha, you messed up the ideals of liberals and conservatives again. Just reverse what you think each one stands for and then you’ll have it right. Don’t worry, no matter how many times you make such a moronic mistake I’ll be there to correct you. I know it’s tricky, but with repetition you’ll someday learn the difference. Since you probably don’t leave your computer room very much, I wouldn’t expect you to know what it’s like in the real world. I can see why you don’t get out much, seeing how you have no job and freeload off your wife.

If you want to have an opinion on the economy and the workforce, maybe you should try being a part of it. Mooch.

  39. NeoConDon says:

Wow, Libby…you hate people that are capable of making more money than you do so they can take several years off to raise their family.

You hate women and think that it’s okay to make jokes about raping young women. That could be why you’re as old as you are and still single!

It’s pretty obvious that even if a person doesn’t need to work because they’ve accumulated wealth, they should be forced to take a job and allow strangers to raise their kids.

Attn: All moms that raise their own kids…you are freeloading the system and are a bunch of mooches. You make no positive impact on the economy and your opinion doesn’t matter…

Of course you and King Barry know what’s best for everyone else.

You probably even favor the idea of the gov’t taking over the health care industry to try to improve the “care” for a small percentage while destroying the care of the large majority.

You hate old people, young people, the employed, the unemployed, stay home parents, cats and dogs.

Appearantly the only people you like are monkeys because they are nearly identical to human beings…

The liberals can keep the intelligent monkeys….

Conservatives will always continue to defend the least among us while liberalism destroys liberty and the american way of life while they beat down the poor and the least among us.

Everything Lyin’ Linear Libby stands for is the gov’t taking your freedoms away, stealing your property and giving it away. He is a perfect example of liberal cruelty…equal misery for all!

His Royal Highness, King Barry the Great is failing. The conservative majority is beginning to prove it to the liberal minority…It is glorious. His own disciples are turning on him. It won’t be long until He hits rock bottom. The arrogance and cruelty of liberalism is imploding on itself. I am anxiously awaiting His failure….that will ensure the success of America.

  40. Mike says:

    Mooch,
    You said:
“Conservatives will always continue to defend the least among us”

And that’s correct. Conservatives defend others the least amount out of all other groups, especially liberals. It’s just not in a conservatives best interest according to their ideals. You got that part right but you’re confused on the rest of it again. It’s ok though. You’re turning the corner I think. Maybe one day you’ll fully grasp that you’ve got the left and right confused with each other. I’ll bet that if you actually left the safety of your own home, you’d realize that it isn’t all doom and gloom outside. You’d realize that Limbaugh has been lying to you. You’re better off freeloading and mooching off your wife for now though, I wouldn’t want your brain to overload.

  41. TitforTat says:

Holy Whackos Batman, You two have way too much time on your hands.
